Manley Waller is an all-around impressive athlete who plays defensive back for the Akron Zips football team. Manley is a returning sophomore who saw real playing time in all 12 Akron Zips football games last season. Manley Waller’s size and speed make him an asset on the field. During the Toledo game last fall, Manley proved he had what it takes to be a defensive player for the Zips. He pulled down 5 beautiful tackles that helped the Akron Zips pull out a great victory over Toledo.
It is no wonder that Manley Waller has been such an impressive athlete for the Akron Zips. Not only does he have an amazing record of his own, but Manley’s mother is Gwen Torrence, and Olympic Gold Medallist in the 200m dash (1992) and two-time winnder of the 4x100 relay (1992 and 1996). She also has placed in other Olympic events, had a standout performance at the 1994 Goodwill Games and the 1995 World Championships. His father was an All-American track athlete at the University of Georgia, basically insuring that Manley would be a sports super-star from birth on.
As a high school student at Southwest Dekalb High School he was named to the Dekalb County All-Star team getting 58 tackles including two sacks. During his junior year he was named “Best Specialist” by recording 54 tackles, 12 rushed and catching 11 passes. Much of Manley Waller’s talent on the football field comes from his speed, Manley was a high school track start running the 100m and 200m, his work helped the Dekalb track team bring home the 2007 State Championship Title. With an impressive history like his, it is no surprise that Manley is gunning for more playing time this season and can not wait to get back out there!
